Empowering Rural Women in Jalihal: The E-Sakhi Project

Yerala Projects Society’s Jalihal project is located at the extreme corner of Maharashtra State in India. The area is remote and with low population density. The area has poor transportation facilities. Women often face difficulty. They have to walk for kilometres in harsh sunlight through remote and unsafe roads. Women groups established by YPS came forward to help suffering women from their villages. YPS provided 9 E-bikes to women from 9 different villages. These are called as ‘E-sakhi’. To contact E-sakhis boards are displayed at 27 different locations. Whenever women get stuck-up at point or roads, they call E-Sakhi for a drop. The nearest E-sakhi pick her up and drops at destination.

Thoughtful Implementation

The E-Sakhi project was rolled out through a series of carefully planned steps:

Procurement of E-Bikes:

E-bikes were sourced from a reliable company at a reasonable price, ensuring that they were affordable and well-suited to the local terrain and conditions.

Identification of Beneficiaries:

Through meetings with key village leaders, four women who were willing and capable of using the E-bikes were identified. These women were selected based on their ability to ride a bicycle, willingness to provide pick-up and drop services to other women, and capacity to maintain the bike independently through the income generated.

Community Awareness:

To promote the new service, display boards with the mobile numbers of the nearest E-Sakhi bike riders were placed at common waiting locations. This enabled any woman in need of transportation to call for pick-up or drop services easily.

Achieved Results

The E-Sakhi project was planned for a duration of 12 months and yielded significant positive outcomes:

Empowered Mobility:

By the end of the project, four women were equipped with E-bikes, allowing them to travel independently within and between the four villages involved in the project.

Economic Improvement:

The women providing pick-up and drop services generated income, improving their economic standing and contributing to their empowerment.

Community Impact:

The availability of reliable, independent transportation enhanced the overall mobility and independence of women in Jalihal, setting a precedent for further initiatives aimed at empowering rural women.

Conclusion

The E-Sakhi project was a bold step towards empowering the women of Jalihal, providing them with the tools they needed to achieve greater independence and economic stability. By addressing the critical issues of transportation and mobility, the project aimed to create a lasting impact on the lives of rural women, helping them to break free from the constraints that had long hindered their progress. As the project unfolded, it brought positive change to the community and paved the way for future empowerment initiatives.
